Chapter 7 The Herbalist Nun
Chapter 7 The Herbalist Nun
Time quickly passed and it was afternoon.
The underground of Kaer Mohen Castle.
Walk through a dark corridor and enter a stone chamber on the left.
The stone room was furnished with wooden tables and chairs, each with a candle burning and emitting wisps of white smoke.
This is where Witcher apprentices take alchemy classes. Not far from the door is the Witcher's exclusive training room.
There, the Witcher's Mysterious Mushrooms are grown, which are the main ingredient in the Green Juice.
Alwin sat in his seat, inhaling the rich herbal scent in the air, his gray cat eyes glancing at the glowing stone above him.
The scene would be considered dim by ordinary people, but with the help of the cat's eye, it was no different from being in the sunlight.
"Why hasn't Master Vesemir arrived yet?"
Paul chuckled beside him, while the other apprentices slumped their heads, looking like they hadn't woken up properly.
"Da da..."
Light footsteps echoed from the outdoor corridor.
Alwin listened for a moment, then immediately turned around to look.
The footsteps sounded wrong. Vesemir was tall, but as a Witcher, his footsteps were very light, like a cat's, and he hardly made a sound.
A woman dressed in a white nun's habit entered the stone chamber. Her face was covered by a white hood, with only her long, black hair hanging down on either side.
She walked straight to the platform in front of the stone chamber, adjusted her cuffs with both hands, revealing her fair and delicate wrists.
Paul, who had been yawning, suddenly perked up and whispered to Alwin.
"Hey, Alwin, look! It's the herbalist nun I told you about this morning."
"Her skin is so white, completely different from the nuns I've seen at the Temple of Meritelli before."
Temple of Meriteri?
Alwin was stunned for a moment.
In The Witcher, Meritelli is the largest religion in the northern kingdoms.
The goddess Meritelli, whom they worship, is mainly depicted as a carefree young girl, a mature pregnant woman, and a hunched old woman, and promotes love and peace.
For this reason, the Temple of Meritelli has always had a good relationship with the Wolf Witchers, who specialize in killing monsters and protecting humanity.
A few years ago, they also came to Kaer Mohen for a short period of humanities education, and Arwen was, of course, one of their students.
An important figure was also present at the time, the future High Priest of the Temple of Meritelli—Nannick.
The only difference is that the influence of the Temple of Meritelli in the northern kingdoms is far from what it was during the heyday of The Witcher.
The herbalist nun glanced around at everyone.
"Attend class!"
The loud voice snapped Alwin back to reality.
The herbalist nun said, "Vesemir has something come up, so I will be teaching you the alchemy class this afternoon. You can call me Ms. Veris."
Ms. Veris?
Alwin frowned slightly, having no memory of this person in his mind.
The apprentices exclaimed in surprise.
The herbalist nun immediately raised her voice and said sternly, "Quiet down now."
The apprentices obediently shut their mouths.
After hearing this, Alwin clearly felt as if he had returned to his school days.
His tone of voice was exactly the same as that of a middle school homeroom teacher who had been teaching for many years.
He vaguely remembered that the nuns of Kaer Morhen who had visited last time were very serene and full of maternal tenderness. Some of them even adhered to some vow of silence and did not speak.
The person before him stood ramrod straight, with a graceful and poised demeanor, exuding a powerful aura, which was somewhat incongruous with the nun he remembered.
The herbalist nun took a herb from a vessel beside the pulpit.
"Can anyone tell me what kind of herb this is?"
Arwen looked at the plant, with its lush green, broad vines, and a word flashed through his mind.
"It's a large-leaved vine."
One of the apprentices immediately gave an answer.
The herbalist nun asked easily, "Very good, so what is its use?"
A brief silence fell over the stone chamber.
The herbalist said gently, "Its roots have very good potency and are often used to make antidotes."
"Your bodies have mutated and have developed extremely high resistance to the vast majority of toxins."
"But when you face powerful monsters, you often drink various potions, such as [Cat] and [Thunder]. These potions have powerful effects, but they also leave deadly toxins in your bodies."
"If the poison isn't neutralized in time, the consequences will be just as dire."
"Alright, everyone come up and get the herbs and tools to process them. Consider this today's class test."
Arwen did not get up when he heard this.
Just now, a system notification sounded in my mind.
[Host's existing skill detected; Herbal Alchemy unlocked]
[Herbal Alchemy Experience +1!]
Herbal Alchemy Lv1: 85/100
Arwen was overjoyed!
It's experience points!
And it's not starting from scratch.
Alchemy is the Witcher's primary method. In the challenging Witcher games, even the most powerful bosses can be easily defeated with just a few potions.
"Arwin, what are you staring at?"
Paul patted Alvin on the shoulder.
Alwin then came to his senses and stood up.
Paul's lips curled up, and he muttered to himself, "He said he wasn't interested in the nun, but he's been distracted."
Arwen and Paul walked side by side to the podium and smelled a refreshing chamomile scent, which came from the herbal nun.
The herbalist nun noticed Alwin's gaze, and a gentle smile appeared on her thin lips beneath her hood.
Alwin avoided eye contact and quickly picked up the wooden tray.
Three herbs, a silver knife, and pure white linen gloves were already prepared on the tray.
The herbalist nun announced in a clear voice, "Now each of you has three herbs in your hands, all of them are very basic."
The apprentices chatted amongst themselves, many scratching their heads. At thirteen or fourteen years old, they were at a very active age and undoubtedly had a strong aversion to the tedious alchemy courses, uttering complaints.
Seeing this, the herbalist nun spoke very patiently.
"Don't worry about failure. If you make a mistake, you can come back and get another one. If you don't understand anything, you can ask me anytime."
After he finished speaking, the apprentices' mood improved considerably.
Unlike the other apprentices, Arwen returned to his seat and stared at the herbs on the tray.
Thanks to the effect of [Dual Soul], he had vivid memories of his previous alchemy lessons and quickly recognized the three herbs.
The first one is the large-leaved vine that the herbalist nun just mentioned.
The second plant is white fern, with its green leaves curling inwards at the front. Like the large-leaved vine, it can neutralize the medicinal effects, but it will reduce sensory perception and induce drowsiness.
Finally, there is the light green herb *Hemiberlesia lingua*, which has the mildest medicinal properties. As its name suggests, it is an herb used to treat injuries to muscles and bones.
"Fortunately, they were all things Vesemir had already told us."
Alwin first opened the system panel, quickly put on gloves, and picked up the silver knife.
He was full of confidence.
"Let's get this going!"
