Chapter 20 Relics of the Previous Dynasty
Chapter 20 Relics of the Previous Dynasty
To be honest, Su Changming was a little apprehensive about dealing with the Demon Suppression Division alone, especially Yao Xian.
He had previously confirmed through the old man's letters that he did indeed have such an "acquaintance".
According to seniority, he was still his elder, so Su Changming should have addressed him as uncle or elder brother.
However, last time, under Ling's control, he played the role of a mysterious and unpredictable master.
They've raised their standards to the point where they don't care about anyone.
If we lower our stance now, wouldn't that ruin our public image?
Therefore, Su Changming felt that he should still put on an act when necessary.
However, he still hoped that Yao Xian wouldn't come in person this time, so that he would feel less pressured to put on the show.
So he lingered in the living room for a long time until the doorbell rang for the second time before slowly getting up.
Passing through the desolate courtyard in the night wind, Su Changming walked to the heavy black iron gate and pulled open the bolt with one hand.
The iron gate slowly opened, revealing two familiar figures standing in the night.
Both were wearing their signature black stand-up collar trench coats.
The leader was a burly man wearing a military cap. The scar running from the corner of his eye to his jaw made him look particularly ferocious. He was Yao Xian, the captain of the third detachment of the Demon Suppression Division.
Behind him stood a gloomy-faced, pale young man with heavy dark circles under his eyes.
Su Changming clicked his tongue in amazement. Now he finally understood why this guy always looked so gloomy. It turned out he was overworked!
They start their missions early in the morning, work during the day, and then work overtime at night.
Upon seeing Su Changming, Jiang Huai forced a smile and said, "Mr. Su, I was busy with official business during the day and didn't have time to greet you."
Su Changming felt a chill run down his spine.
Sure enough, during the day, among the crowd at school, I couldn't hide it from this guy's eyes.
He didn't say much, just nodded slightly, as if to say, "I understand, I appreciate your kindness."
Seeing this, Yao Xian smiled and said, "Speaking of which, today is your first day in office, Nephew Changming. Xiwei praised you highly as soon as she came back."
Yao Xian stood with his hands behind his back, his tone laced with sarcasm.
"They say that although the new Chinese literature professor is young, he is very knowledgeable and has unique insights."
Yao Xiwei?
Hearing this, Su Changming's expression was a bit strange. He had barely interacted with her all day, so he didn't expect her to think so highly of him.
However, Yao Xian's words cannot be taken at face value. Judging from their extremely polite manners, it is obvious that they either want something from him or want him to cooperate in doing something.
Su Changming didn't respond to that question, but simply gestured for them to come in with a cold expression.
"It's windy outside, come inside if you need anything."
After saying that, he ignored their reactions, turned around, left them with a proud and aloof back view, and strode towards the small villa.
Upon seeing this, Yao Xian and his companion exchanged a glance and then quickly followed.
……
In the living room, the Western-style chandelier emitted a soft glow.
Su Changming slowly brewed a pot of broth and poured a cup for each of them, his movements fluid and graceful.
Then he picked up his teacup, gently blew on the foam, and said nothing.
Yao Xian and Jiang Huai could only sit and drink with him.
After a few cups of tea, Jiang Huai was the first to lose his composure and spoke up: "Mr. Su, we have come here to discuss important matters."
Su Changming looked up at him. His face looked even paler under the light, and the dark circles under his eyes were made even more obvious.
Even so, Su Changming simply slurped down another sip of tea.
Seeing that he didn't speak, Jiang Huai was about to continue speaking, but Yao Xian interrupted him before he could finish.
"Let me put it this way, Changming. Let's not beat around the bush. The situation on Shenghai Beach right now is probably worse than you think."
He sighed.
"Ever since the Victoria docked, the so-called Holy Church has spread like a plague in the concession and even the old city. They not only bewitch people, but also secretly collect some extremely dangerous things."
"Under normal circumstances, a few cultists could be wiped out by my Demon Suppression Division with a flick of my hand, but now..."
Yao Xian paused, his tone tinged with heaviness:
"There's been a riot in the north. The headquarters has dispatched most of its elite troops north to suppress it. The entire Shenghai branch is now severely understaffed and stretched thin."
At this point, he stared intently at Su Changming, his tone solemn:
"Therefore, we need help, we need experts like Changming to lend a hand."
Upon hearing this, Su Changming slowly put down his teacup.
To be honest, Yao Xian's words were sincere and heartfelt, and he adopted a very humble attitude, giving him a lot of face.
Logically speaking, out of respect for the old man, he should have readily agreed.
However, the problem is that Su Changming is not some kind of expert!
Meanwhile, the real thigh was still hiding in the mark, resting with its eyes closed, showing no reaction whatsoever.
If he agrees to something so easily, and then something really happens and Ling refuses to come out, who will he complain to?
There was no other way; at this point, Su Changming could only grit his teeth and continue pretending to be an expert.
"Captain Yao, you flatter me."
He leaned back on the sofa, arms crossed, expression indifferent.
"I'm just a teacher. I'm good at writing and painting, but when it comes to fighting and killing... I'm afraid I'm powerless to do it."
"Moreover, the Demon Suppression Division is a vital national asset. If even you find it troublesome, wouldn't it be suicide for me to go?"
The refusal was very decisive.
But who is Yao Xian? He's a seasoned fox who's been in the power circles for years. His first reaction upon hearing this was that the young man wasn't being honest and was trying to sell himself to a higher bidder!
However, there are no deals that can't be reached, only deals where the bargaining chips are insufficient.
"Changming, you're too modest."
Yao Xian wasn't annoyed. He smiled slightly, turned around, and waved to Jiang Huai.
Jiang Huai stepped forward expressionlessly, pulled out an antique-looking sandalwood box from somewhere, placed it on the coffee table, and then gently opened it.
Su Changming stared intently.
I originally thought it would be some dazzling treasure or a priceless gold bar.
It turned out to be a stone.
It was only the size of a baby's fist, and its entire body was grayish and looked dull.
If you threw this thing on the roadside, even a dog probably wouldn't give it a second glance.
Seeing Su Changming's lack of reaction, Yao Xian glanced at him with some surprise.
He then introduced, "Changming, I see that your sword is incredibly sharp. This is a relic left over from the previous dynasty, and it can be considered an absolute treasure for sword cultivators."
treasure?
Su Changming still couldn't figure out where the treasure was.
However, Ling, who had been silent in the hazy space, opened her eyes at this moment.
His eyes seemed to hold a sense of reminiscence.
Su Changming's heart skipped a beat, and he couldn't help but ask, "What exactly is this thing?"
Ling did not answer Su Changming directly, but said in a cold tone.
"If I take it, I can make a move."
