Chapter 81: Misjudgment
Chapter 81: Misjudgment
Tony's thinking was understandable; each watchtower had one ballista, and they had just fired four shots. If they launched their charge now, the ballistae would be useless once they reached the city walls.
The Imperial Knights mounted their horses en masse, and dozens of heavy cavalrymen clad in half-plate armor surged out from the flank of the camp, their hooves thundering across the cracked wasteland.
They ignored the retreating mercenaries and charged straight toward the front of the city wall.
Tony's visor was lifted, revealing a face full of fleshy, grotesque features, his eyes filled with hatred.
Ron stood on the city wall, watching the black-armored cavalry surge in like a tide.
"Fanta, have the catapults launch at their designated positions. Aim the crossbows at the cavalry formation, and fire arrows as soon as the catapults fall."
Before the Knights of the Inspectorate arrived, Ron had his men secretly mark the area outside the city. The purpose of this was to allow the catapults to launch attacks quickly, similar to hitting a stationary target.
On the very first day of the arrival of the Jaisalmers, the city immediately turned the catapults' attack direction towards the front of the Jaisalmers' camp.
"Sector Four, launch!"
With the help of his telescope, Old Hall quickly estimated the distance and issued the attack order.
Melissa raised the mallet and slammed it hard onto the trebuchet's mechanism.
Whoops!
Twelve round stones, each weighing over fifty pounds, were simultaneously thrown into the sky and fell towards area four, which was precisely where the Knights were charging.
When Tony heard the ear-piercing crashing sound, he instinctively looked up and saw twelve giant rocks flying from the sky.
This was precisely where they were charging, and their horses were only just picking up speed. If they turned, their entire sides would be exposed.
Tony quickly raised his lance: "Speed up, speed up! Charge!"
The knight stabbed the horse hard in the belly with the spikes on his stirrups, and the horse, in pain, increased its speed again.
As the boulder drew ever closer, Hilpha roared and raised his shield high.
"A knight can only die on the path of his charge! Charge!"
The boulder fell with a thunderous roar.
The knights running behind could only watch helplessly as the boulder fell and crushed them into a bloody pulp.
Of the fifty-odd knights, more than ten were killed in an instant.
Before Tony could even catch his breath, he saw more than a dozen crossbows flying towards him.
He looked incredulous and bewildered.
This territory has so many catapults and ballistae, how are we going to fight this battle?
In a moment of crisis, Tony pushed off his horse and leaped off.
The Sky Knights are called Sky Knights because they have the ability to glide briefly through the sky.
Tony's leap left the knights, including Hillfa, helpless as they could only close their eyes in despair, utterly powerless to withstand the sudden attack.
puff puff!
Their prized heavy armor was shattered by the crossbow bolts, and many knights were shot off their horses. The knights in the back were luckier; the crossbow bolts were not capable of penetrating the shields and heavy armor of two knights in succession, so the knights in the back were only knocked to the ground.
By the time this volley of crossbow bolts ended, fewer than ten knights remained on horseback. Hilfa narrowly escaped a fatal blow by clinging to his horse's back. They were now less than ten meters from the city wall, a distance at which the Eight-Ox Crossbow could no longer harm them.
Tony glided through the air and landed at the city gate tower.
He had already seen Ron, who was also looking up at him at the sky.
puff!
The crossbows on both sides fired at Tony simultaneously. The knights under the city wall in front of him and the crossbows on the other three sides of the city wall could only watch helplessly. So when they saw someone in the sky, the remaining crossbows did not hesitate to fire at him.
With nowhere to gain leverage in the sky, Tony could only use his life force to propel himself through the air and change direction.
However, there were so many crossbows that they almost covered the area where he was located.
He barely dodged most of the crossbow bolts, but was still hit by two of them. The powerful impact sent him flying from the sky, crashing heavily to the ground.
Old Hall added at the opportune moment: "The Sky Knights' heavy armor is far superior to that of the Earth Knights; it's twice as thick."
This was actually said to Ron.
Tony was shot in the shoulder and leg armor by a crossbow bolt. The excruciating pain caused him to lose control of his life force. He tumbled and fell from a height of thirty meters. The weight of himself and his heavy armor exceeded three hundred and fifty pounds. He crashed into the battering ram at the city gate. The heavy armor collided with the wood with a dull thud. The battering ram shattered into pieces, and most of the mercenaries hiding inside were crushed to death.
Hillfa glanced at the scene from horseback, and the sight of Tony crashing into the battering ram made his pupils shrink. Without hesitation, he turned his horse around. He knew that staying to save Tony would only get him killed as well. Just before crashing into the wall, he successfully turned and rode away.
Hilfa escaped swiftly and decisively with the remaining members of the Imperial Guard.
That decisive action made Ron feel inferior.
Leonardo da Vinci stared in disbelief at the battlefield before him: "That's it?"
The war ended with a single volley from the catapults and the eight-ox crossbows.
Old Hall couldn't help but chuckle and said, "The enemy misjudged the situation and ran right into the line of fire. The Sky Knights are all gone, what are the remaining remnants supposed to do?"
Ron said with a big smile, "Fanta, clean up the battlefield! Da Vinci, those mercenaries are yours. Persuade them to surrender if you can, otherwise throw them away as fertilizer. Anyway, we've been cultivating more and more farmland lately, and our magic fertilizer is running out."
Leonardo da Vinci immediately understood and led his men to shout from the city wall: "Lay down your weapons and surrender, or you will be killed!"
"Lay down your weapons and surrender, or you will be spared!"
Soon, mercenaries dropped their weapons. Russell was caught in the blind spot of the battering ram. He wasn't killed by Tony, but he was still dizzy from the fall. After barely managing to crawl out of the battering ram, he heard that surrendering would spare his life. He decisively dropped his weapon and raised his hands.
"I surrender, please don't kill me."
As Russell shouted, the other mercenaries reacted and quickly dropped their weapons.
The mercenaries, who had lost their weapons, were quickly put into the barbican. They then saw that the walls surrounding the barbican were filled with soldiers with bows drawn, and they were all pale with fright.
Russell immediately shouted, raising his hands: "Gentlemen, we surrender! No need to draw the bows! We won't move! We won't move!"
Russell's reaction represented that of most mercenaries; they were genuinely afraid that someone might accidentally fire an arrow, and the others would be in real trouble if they thought they had received the order to shoot and were all killed.
Leonardo da Vinci couldn't help but burst into laughter, leading a squad of knights into the barbican and binding the mercenaries one by one.
Of the more than 300 mercenaries, less than 150 are still alive and able to move. There are also dozens of wounded soldiers lying on the ground outside the city, groaning in pain.
Da Vinci imprisoned all the unharmed mercenaries, while the wounded mercenaries, including Russell, and the seriously wounded mercenaries from outside the city were all carried in and sent to Ashwood Hospital.
